Ardian Commits 5 Billion Euros to AI Gigafactory Near Paris to Boost European AI Capacity

French private equity group Ardian announced a 5 billion euro investment to back an AI gigafactory near Paris, positioning Europe as a serious player in the global race to build AI infrastructure.

The facility is designed to serve as a major data center and research hub, supporting Europe's growing demand for AI compute capacity. Ardian said the investment reflects the firm's view that AI infrastructure is one of the most important capital allocation opportunities of the decade.

The announcement came on June 1, 2026, alongside a wave of AI infrastructure news from Computex 2026, where Nvidia unveiled its RTX Spark superchip and Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra.

Europe has been working to reduce its dependence on U.S. and Asian AI infrastructure. The Ardian gigafactory is part of a broader push by European governments and private investors to build sovereign AI capacity, following concerns that reliance on foreign cloud providers creates strategic vulnerabilities.

Dell reported an 88 percent revenue jump in its most recent quarter, driven by AI server demand, with fiscal 2027 forecasts reaching $60 billion. Samsung has begun shipping 12-layer HBM4E memory samples to meet demand for high-bandwidth memory in AI hardware.

IBM and Red Hat committed $5 billion to Project Lightwell on May 28, a separate initiative focused on securing the open-source software supply chain against AI-accelerated threats.

The global AI infrastructure buildout is drawing investment from governments, sovereign wealth funds, and private equity firms across North America, Europe, and Asia. Analysts say the competition for AI compute capacity is reshaping the geography of technology investment.
