Arthritis Drug Shows Promise for Hair Regrowth in Alopecia Patients
Phase 3 clinical trials show that upadacitinib, an oral drug currently used for rheumatoid arthritis, produced significant scalp hair regrowth in patients with severe alopecia areata. In one study, 55 percent of patients on the higher dose achieved 80 percent or greater scalp coverage by week 24. AbbVie submitted an FDA application for the new indication in April 2026.
An oral drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis has shown strong results for hair regrowth in patients with severe alopecia areata, according to Phase 3 clinical trial data published in August 2026.
Upadacitinib, sold under the brand name Rinvoq and made by AbbVie, was tested in two replicate studies involving 1,399 adult and adolescent participants with severe alopecia areata. The primary endpoint was achieving 80 percent or greater scalp hair coverage by week 24.
In Study 1, 45.2 percent of patients on the 15 mg dose and 55 percent on the 30 mg dose met that endpoint, compared to 1.5 percent in the placebo group. Similar results were seen in Study 2.
Upadacitinib was also the first JAK inhibitor to meet the ranked secondary endpoint of complete scalp hair regrowth at week 24. Efficacy continued to improve through week 52 in the blinded extension phase.
AbbVie submitted an application to the FDA in April 2026 seeking approval of upadacitinib for adults and adolescents with severe alopecia areata. The drug is not yet approved for this use, and its safety and efficacy remain under regulatory review.
The safety profile in the alopecia trials was consistent with previously established data for the drug. Common mild adverse events included transient acneiform eruptions and elevations in creatine phosphokinase. As a systemic immunosuppressant, the drug carries risks of serious infections, major cardiovascular events, and blood clots.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition that causes patchy or total hair loss. Current treatment options are limited, and many patients do not respond to existing therapies.
