August Is National Wellness Month: Experts Share Tips for Mental and Physical Health

August is National Wellness Month, a time dedicated to building sustainable habits that support mental, physical, and emotional health. Health experts say the observance is a good opportunity to reset routines and prioritize well-being.

The initiative was founded by Live Love Spa in 2018 and encourages participants to take the "I Choose Wellness" pledge. A 31-day wellness challenge provides a structured way to integrate small, consistent habits into daily life.

Experts recommend several evidence-based practices for improving health during the month and beyond.

Daily movement is one of the most effective tools for boosting mood. At least 30 minutes of physical activity, whether walking, yoga, or cycling, can significantly improve emotional health. Research also shows that stair climbing specifically may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death.

Quality sleep is equally important. Establishing a regular sleep schedule and limiting screen time before bed helps the body and mind recover. Experts at Washington University in St. Louis noted that consistent sleep is a key component of professional and personal resilience.

Mindfulness and meditation, even in short daily sessions, can reduce stress and improve focus. Gratitude practices, such as journaling or acknowledging one positive thing each day, can also build emotional resilience over time.

Social connection is another pillar of wellness. Maintaining relationships with friends and family, whether in person or virtually, supports happiness and emotional stability.

Basic physical health habits, including consistent hydration and a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, form the foundation for mental health. Setting boundaries around work, including designated times to disconnect from email, helps protect mental energy.

Participants are encouraged to share their wellness journey on social media using hashtags including #NationalWellnessMonth and #ichoosewellness.
