Bishop Hezekiah Walker opened HezHouse Apartments in New York City in mid-October 2026, becoming the first gospel artist to develop housing in the city.

The project, six years in the making, held its grand opening ceremony this week. Walker, the Grammy-winning gospel artist and pastor of Love Fellowship Tabernacle in Brooklyn, said the development grew out of his belief that faith leaders have a responsibility to address the practical needs of their communities.

"The church has always been more than a place of worship," Walker said at the opening. "It is a place of action."

HezHouse Apartments is designed to provide affordable housing options in a city where rising rents have displaced many longtime residents, particularly in Black and low-income communities. Details on the number of units and income eligibility requirements were not immediately available.

Walker's move into real estate development follows a broader trend of Black faith leaders using their platforms and resources to address housing insecurity. Churches in Chicago and other cities have also launched affordable housing projects in recent years.

The opening drew community members, local officials, and fellow gospel artists who praised Walker for putting his resources toward tangible community benefit.
