Black Megachurch Donates Over $1 Million to Stop Evictions of 300 Families

A Black megachurch in Virginia donated more than $1 million to prevent the eviction of more than 300 families from local public housing. The gift came as residents faced displacement due to funding shortfalls at the housing authority.

Church leaders said the donation was a direct response to a crisis in their community. The families at risk of eviction included many longtime residents who had no other housing options.

"We saw a need and we had the resources to meet it," said a church spokesperson. "Keeping families in their homes is ministry."

The donation covered back rent and fees owed by residents, allowing the housing authority to avoid proceeding with eviction filings. Housing advocates praised the church''s response as an example of faith-based institutions stepping into gaps left by public funding.

The church, which has thousands of members, has a history of community investment. It operates food programs, job training, and financial counseling services in addition to its worship ministry.

Housing instability has increased in many Virginia communities over the past two years as federal pandemic-era rental assistance programs ended and inflation pushed up costs for low-income renters. Advocates say the need for emergency housing support has outpaced available resources.

The National Black Church Initiative, a coalition of 150,000 African American churches, has been pushing member congregations to expand housing and financial literacy programs. The organization has also urged corporations to maintain diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments that support Black communities.

The Virginia church''s donation drew national attention and prompted calls from housing advocates for other large congregations to consider similar emergency giving.
