Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States. Early detection dramatically improves survival rates, but many people avoid colonoscopies because of the preparation process, cost, or discomfort. A simple blood test could remove those barriers.

DENEB works by detecting specific markers in the blood that indicate the presence of cancerous or precancerous tissue in the colon. In early testing, the test identified polyps and early-stage cancers with accuracy that researchers described as clinically meaningful.

The test is still experimental and has not received FDA approval. Researchers say larger clinical trials are needed before it can be recommended for routine screening. But the early results have generated interest among gastroenterologists and oncologists who see blood-based screening as a way to reach patients who currently skip colonoscopies.

Colorectal cancer rates have been rising among younger adults. The American Cancer Society updated its guidelines in recent years to recommend screening starting at age 45 rather than 50. A blood test that is easy to administer could help close the gap between recommended and actual screening rates.

Other blood-based cancer tests have reached the market in recent years, including tests for multiple cancer types. DENEB is designed specifically for colorectal cancer and polyp detection, which researchers say may give it an advantage in accuracy for that specific application.
