Several U.S. Catholic bishops met with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office in October 2026, praying together and discussing religious freedom concerns. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) issued a statement clarifying that it played no official role in organizing or coordinating the visit.

The meeting was informal in nature, according to reports from religion news outlets. Bishops who attended did so in a personal capacity rather than as official representatives of the USCCB or any diocese.

Religious freedom has been a recurring topic between Catholic leaders and the Trump administration. Issues including access for clergy to immigration detainees, conscience protections for healthcare workers, and federal funding for faith-based organizations have all been subjects of ongoing dialogue.

A Catholic diocese in the U.S. is currently suing the federal government to secure clergy access to detainees held in immigration facilities, a case that has drawn attention from bishops across the country.

The Oval Office visit reflects the complex relationship between the Catholic hierarchy and the Trump White House. While some bishops have praised the administration's positions on abortion and religious liberty, others have raised concerns about immigration enforcement and its effects on Catholic communities and institutions.

The USCCB did not release details about which bishops attended or the specific topics discussed during the meeting.

Church of England Faces Calls for Ruthless Reform as General Synod Remains Deadlocked

A new report by Canon Professor Robin Gill and Professor John Craven urges the Church of England to cut the number of dioceses and bishops from 40 to 30 to reduce costs and refocus on parish ministry. The call comes as analysis of recent General Synod elections shows the legislative body remains as divided as before, with conservative members holding a 34 percent blocking minority. Southwell Minster is also facing a financial crisis that could force its closure.

White Evangelical Support for Trump Falls to 63 Percent as Midterms Near, Poll Finds

A Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted in October 2026 found that 63 percent of white evangelical Protestants approve of President Trump, down from 77 percent at his January 2025 inauguration. The 14-point drop mirrors a broader national decline but leaves white evangelicals as the only major demographic group with approval above 60 percent. Republican strategists are counting on strong evangelical turnout to limit losses in the November 3 midterm elections.

UK Think Tank Finds 11 Percent of Britons Hold Christian Nationalist Views, Church of England Responds

A new report from the UK think tank Theos found that roughly 11 percent of British adults hold views consistent with Christian nationalism. The Church of England has responded by distancing itself from anti-migrant rhetoric and the political use of religious symbols. Bishops say the findings highlight a need for clearer public communication about what Christian faith actually teaches.
