White Evangelical Support for Trump Falls to 63 Percent as Midterms Near, Poll Finds
A Reuters/Ipsos survey conducted in October 2026 found that 63 percent of white evangelical Protestants approve of President Trump, down from 77 percent at his January 2025 inauguration. The 14-point drop mirrors a broader national decline but leaves white evangelicals as the only major demographic group with approval above 60 percent. Republican strategists are counting on strong evangelical turnout to limit losses in the November 3 midterm elections.
White evangelical support for President Donald Trump has slipped to 63 percent, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in October 2026. That is down from 77 percent when Trump was inaugurated in January 2025, a 14-point decline over roughly 21 months.
The drop tracks a wider national trend. Trump's overall approval rating hit an all-time low of 31 percent in the same survey period. Yet white evangelicals remain the only major demographic group the firm tracks with approval above 60 percent, making them a critical base for Republicans heading into the November 3 midterm elections.
Earlier Pew Research data from January 2026 showed a similar pattern. At that point, white evangelical approval had already fallen to 69 percent, and the share expressing confidence in Trump's ethics had dropped 15 percentage points since February 2025.
Interviews with voters suggest that many white evangelicals continue to prioritize social and religious issues, including abortion policy and transgender rights, over economic grievances. Some assign blame for inflation and rising costs to the Biden administration's legacy rather than current policy.
Republican strategists say strong evangelical turnout in states like South Carolina, Iowa, and Texas could be decisive in determining whether the party holds its congressional majorities. Democrats have seen improved odds of taking the House and potentially the Senate, making evangelical mobilization a key variable in the final weeks of the campaign.
The Reuters/Ipsos survey was conducted between September 28 and October 4, 2026.
