The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte has committed at least $4 million to the project, with the total estimated cost exceeding $6.7 million. Our Lady of Consolation Catholic Church in Charlotte, North Carolina, is moving toward a long-awaited renovation after years of holding services in a community space due to mold and structural damage.
The Catholic Diocese of Charlotte has committed at least $4 million to the project. An additional $1.1 million is contingent on the church raising $1.5 million on its own. The total estimated cost for repairs and expansion exceeds $6.7 million.
The church was founded in 1955 and is the only Black Catholic parish in Charlotte. It has faced deterioration from age and mold, forcing the congregation to relocate services since 2020.
"This church is more than a building," said the parish's pastor. "It is the spiritual home of generations of Black Catholics in this city."
Construction is expected to begin in 2028. The renovation will include structural repairs, expanded worship space, and updated facilities for community programs.
The diocese said the project reflects its commitment to preserving historically significant parishes. Church leaders have been working with architects and contractors to develop a plan that honors the building's original design while meeting modern safety standards.
The fundraising campaign has already drawn support from Black Catholic communities across the Southeast. Several national Catholic organizations have also pledged contributions.
Black Catholics in the United States number approximately 2.8 million, representing about 5% of all U.S. adult Catholics. In Charlotte, the congregation at Our Lady of Consolation has remained active despite the displacement, gathering in a community center for weekly Mass.
Parishioners said the renovation announcement brought relief and renewed energy to the community.
