Chipotle Mexican Grill pulled jalapenos from certain restaurant locations in early August 2026 after health officials identified a potential link between the ingredient and a Salmonella outbreak.

The company said it removed the ingredient as a precautionary measure while investigators work to confirm the source of contamination. Chipotle stated it is cooperating fully with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local health departments.

Salmonella infections typically cause diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, with symptoms appearing six hours to six days after exposure. Most people recover without medical treatment, but the illness can be severe for young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

Chipotle has faced food safety incidents in the past, including a high-profile E. coli outbreak in 2015 that affected hundreds of customers across multiple states. The company subsequently overhauled its food safety protocols and supply chain practices.

The current investigation is focused on the supply chain for jalapenos, which are sourced from multiple farms. Health officials have not yet identified a specific farm or supplier as the source of the contamination.

Customers who ate at affected locations and developed symptoms were advised to contact their healthcare provider. Chipotle said it would restore jalapenos to its menu once investigators cleared the ingredient as safe.
