Cognition AI Raises $2 Billion at $48 Billion Valuation as Demand for Coding Agents Surges

Cognition, the AI coding startup behind the Devin autonomous software engineer, raised $2 billion in a new funding round that values the company at $48 billion.

The raise reflects continued investor confidence in autonomous coding tools. Enterprises are increasingly looking to AI agents to accelerate software development, reduce engineering costs, and handle repetitive coding tasks.

Cognition launched Devin in early 2024 as the first AI system capable of completing end-to-end software engineering tasks. The product can write code, run tests, fix bugs, and deploy applications with minimal human input. The company has since expanded its product line and grown its customer base significantly.

The $48 billion valuation makes Cognition one of the most valuable AI startups in the world. The funding round was reported by TechStartups on September 9, 2026.

The broader AI coding market has attracted significant investment in 2026. Harvey, a legal AI company that uses similar autonomous agent technology for legal work, reached a $15.6 billion valuation following a $550 million funding round. Listen Labs, an AI research startup, halted a $1.5 billion funding round to pursue acquisition talks with Salesforce.

Investors are betting that autonomous AI agents will become standard tools across professional services. The shift from AI assistants that answer questions to agents that complete tasks independently is seen as the next major phase of AI adoption in enterprise settings.

Cognition has not disclosed specific revenue figures, but the company says its customer base includes large technology companies and financial institutions. The new funding will be used to expand the engineering team and develop new capabilities for the Devin platform.
