A review of nearly 8,000 study participants found that consistent collagen supplementation improved skin elasticity and reduced symptoms of osteoarthritis, offering some of the strongest evidence yet that the popular supplement delivers measurable health benefits.

The review, published in June 2026, analyzed data from multiple clinical trials examining the effects of collagen peptides on skin health and joint function. Participants who took collagen supplements consistently over periods ranging from eight weeks to six months showed improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and the appearance of fine lines. Those with osteoarthritis reported reduced joint pain and improved mobility.

Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body, found in skin, cartilage, tendons, and bones. Production declines with age, which researchers believe contributes to skin aging and joint deterioration. Collagen supplements are derived primarily from animal sources, including bovine hide and marine fish.

The review's authors noted that not all collagen products are equal. Hydrolyzed collagen peptides, which are broken down into smaller molecules for easier absorption, showed the most consistent results across studies. Products with higher molecular weight collagen showed less reliable effects.

Experts said the findings support collagen as a reasonable addition to a health routine for people dealing with skin aging or mild joint discomfort, but cautioned that it is not a substitute for medical treatment of serious joint conditions.

The supplement market for collagen has grown rapidly in recent years, with products ranging from powders and capsules to drinks and food additives. Prices and quality vary significantly, and researchers recommended looking for products that have been independently tested.
