The study followed a large cohort of adults through midlife, tracking three modifiable health factors and their relationship to dementia diagnosis in later years. Researchers found that controlling all three factors was associated with a significant delay in when dementia symptoms first appeared.

The findings build on earlier research showing that lifestyle and health management in middle age have lasting effects on brain health. High blood pressure, in particular, has been linked to increased risk of vascular dementia, while diabetes affects blood flow and glucose metabolism in the brain.

"Midlife is when these interventions matter most," said one of the study's lead researchers. "The brain changes that lead to dementia often begin decades before symptoms appear."

The research adds to a growing consensus that dementia is not inevitable and that preventive steps taken in middle age can meaningfully reduce risk. The Alzheimer's Association has estimated that addressing modifiable risk factors could prevent or delay up to 40 percent of dementia cases globally.

Public health experts say the findings underscore the need for better access to preventive care, particularly for communities that face higher rates of hypertension and diabetes due to systemic health disparities.
