Curacao and Germany Players Pray Together After World Cup Match
After Germany defeated Curacao 7-1 in a Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Houston on June 14, players from both teams gathered at center field to pray together. The moment went viral, drawing wide attention to the faith of the Curacao squad, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup.

Germany beat Curacao 7-1 in a Group E match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Houston on June 14. When the final whistle blew, players from both teams walked to the center circle and prayed together.
The moment spread quickly across social media.
German midfielder Felix Nmecha, who scored the opening goal, explained what happened. "In the game we are opponents, but after the match we are all Christians and brothers," he said. "We simply said a little prayer together because we are all very grateful. We all believe that Jesus is glorified through the game."
Nmecha was joined by German defender Jonathan Tah and several Curacao players.
Curacao made history at this World Cup as the smallest nation ever to qualify. The team had drawn attention for its public faith before the tournament even began. Players held worship sessions in the Netherlands during preparation and gather for prayer before every practice and match. That tradition was started by their late goalkeeper, Jairzinho Pieter, and is now led by team captain Leandro Bacuna.
The team's T-shirts carry the Papiamentu phrase "Dios Dilanti, Korsou su tras," which translates to "God at the front, Curacao behind him."
Local pastors in Curacao said they hope the team's openness about faith will help retain young people in the church. Christian commentators praised the prayer circle as a rare public display of unity that cut across the competitive nature of the sport.
