Washington, D.C. faith communities are coming together on September 17 at Zion Baptist Church for the DC Faith-Based Legacy Challenge, an event designed to connect churches with civic engagement and leadership development opportunities.

Organizers say the gathering will bring together pastors, lay leaders, and community advocates from across the D.C. metro area. The agenda includes workshops on voter mobilization, community organizing, and faith-based advocacy.

"The church has always been at the center of civic life in this community," said one of the event organizers. "This challenge is about renewing that commitment and equipping leaders for the work ahead."

The event is part of a broader trend of faith communities in the D.C. area stepping up their involvement in public policy and community development. Several participating churches have been active in housing advocacy, education reform, and health equity campaigns.

Zion Baptist Church, which is hosting the event, has a long history of civic engagement dating back to the civil rights era. Church leaders say the venue choice is intentional, meant to honor that legacy while looking forward.

Speakers at the event will include local elected officials, nonprofit leaders, and faith-based advocates. Attendees will have the opportunity to sign up for ongoing civic engagement programs and connect with partner organizations.

Registration for the event is open to all faith communities in the region. Organizers expect several hundred participants from dozens of congregations.

The DC Faith-Based Legacy Challenge is part of a series of events organized by the Black church community in the D.C. area to strengthen ties between faith institutions and civic life.
