The Federal Reserve's April 28-29 policy meeting arrives at an unusual moment, with Chair Jerome Powell's term expiring on May 15 and his nominated successor, Kevin Warsh, still awaiting Senate confirmation.

The federal funds rate target range has held at 3.50 to 3.75 percent since the March 18 meeting. The committee will announce its decision on April 29 at 2:00 PM Eastern Time, followed by a Powell press conference.

Markets are focused on whether the Fed will signal a rate cut later in 2026. Analysts are divided. Inflation has cooled from its 2022 peak, but the Iran conflict has pushed energy prices higher, and trade policy uncertainty has complicated the economic outlook.

The Fed's dual mandate requires it to pursue maximum employment and price stability, with a 2 percent inflation target. The effective federal funds rate stood at approximately 3.64 percent in March.

Warsh, a former Fed governor and Wall Street banker, has been nominated by President Trump to succeed Powell. His confirmation hearing has drawn attention from financial markets because of his past criticism of the Fed's inflation response and his views on the central bank's independence.

The April meeting does not include a Summary of Economic Projections or a "dot plot," which are released at alternate meetings. The next scheduled FOMC meeting is in June 2026.

Investors in interest rate futures markets have priced in a roughly even chance of one rate cut before the end of 2026, with the timing depending heavily on inflation data in the coming months.
