Fred Hammond Set for NPR Tiny Desk as Gospel Community Marks Black Music Month

Gospel veteran Fred Hammond is scheduled to appear on NPR's Tiny Desk concert series in June 2026 as part of Black Music Month celebrations. The booking marks a significant moment of mainstream recognition for a genre that has historically been underrepresented in crossover media coverage.

Black Music Month, also known as African American Music Appreciation Month, is observed each June. This year, media outlets and cultural organizations are using the occasion to spotlight gospel music's deep roots in Black American life and its influence on virtually every major American music genre, from soul and R&B to hip-hop and pop.

Hammond, who has been a leading figure in contemporary gospel music for more than three decades, is known for his work with the group Commissioned and a long solo career that includes multiple Stellar Gospel Music Award wins. His Tiny Desk appearance is expected to draw attention from both gospel fans and a broader NPR audience.

The Gospel Music Association noted that appearances like Hammond's on mainstream platforms help introduce gospel music to listeners who may not regularly engage with the genre. The association has been working to expand gospel's visibility in streaming and media spaces.

Alongside the Hammond booking, the 41st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards nominations were recently announced, with the ceremony scheduled for later in 2026. The Stellar Awards remain the premier recognition event for gospel music, honoring artists across traditional, contemporary, and urban gospel categories.

June also saw Atlanta's inaugural "bamX, Black Music Week" extend into the month, celebrating the global reach of Black American music across multiple genres.
