Google Unveils Gemini Spark at I/O 2026 as Always-On AI Agent for Workspace

Google Unveils Gemini Spark at I/O 2026 as Always-On AI Agent for Workspace

Google unveiled Gemini Spark at its annual I/O developer conference this week, an always-on AI agent that can work across Google Workspace, third-party applications, and files stored on a user's device.

Unlike previous AI assistants that respond to individual prompts, Gemini Spark is designed to monitor ongoing tasks, anticipate needs, and take action without being asked each time. It can draft emails, schedule meetings, summarize documents, and coordinate between apps automatically.

"This is not a chatbot," said Google CEO Sundar Pichai. "Gemini Spark is an agent that works for you in the background, all day."

The product integrates with Gmail, Google Docs, Calendar, and more than 200 third-party apps through a new API. Developers can build custom actions that Gemini Spark can trigger on behalf of users.

Privacy advocates raised concerns about an always-on agent with access to email, files, and calendar data. Google said users can set granular permissions and review a log of all actions the agent takes.

Gemini Spark will roll out to Google Workspace subscribers in phases starting in July 2026. A consumer version for personal Google accounts is planned for later in the year.

The announcement puts Google in direct competition with Microsoft's Copilot agents and Apple's expanded Siri capabilities, both of which are also moving toward autonomous task completion.
