Historic Black churches are receiving crucial support for preservation efforts. Shiloh Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia, founded in 1863 by formerly enslaved African Americans, received a $360,000 grant from the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund's Preserving Black Churches program.

The funding will support the enhancement of its worship space and the preservation of its structural integrity. The church, located near the Freedom House Museum, which historically sold enslaved people, stands as a symbol of community and faith.

Another recipient, Mt. Moriah AME Church in Annapolis, Maryland, built in 1874 by free African Americans, received $100,000 to support its Sacred Spaces Arts & Residency program.

These preservation efforts underscore the Black churches' role in strengthening social justice movements, fostering communal advocacy, and contributing to American history. The Black Church has historically been a vital institution in the African American community, providing spiritual guidance, social justice advocacy, and cultural preservation.

The historical context of the Black Church is deeply rooted in the struggles against slavery, racism, and exclusion. It emerged as a sanctuary for hope, resilience, and community, offering a platform for personal development, spiritual autonomy, and a significant identity for African Americans.
