Mental Health Awareness Month 2026 Focuses on Closing the Gap in Access to Care
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and advocates across the country are pushing to reduce financial and social barriers to mental health treatment. New data shows over 59 million Americans live with a mental illness, yet many cannot access care due to cost or stigma.
May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year's focus is on closing the gap between the number of people who need mental health care and those who can actually get it.
More than 59 million Americans live with a mental illness, according to national health data. Nearly 46 percent of Americans are expected to meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives. Yet financial barriers, workplace stigma, and a shortage of providers keep millions from getting help.
In Michigan, Governor Whitmer's office launched Michigan.gov/WorkplaceMentalHealth, a centralized hub for mental health resources aimed at employees and employers. The site includes tools for recognizing distress, connecting with services, and building supportive workplace cultures.
The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline handled nearly 400,000 calls, texts, and chats in the past year. Crisis workers provide immediate support, de-escalation, and referrals to local services. Advocates are urging more people to save the number and share it with friends and family.
A report from Bleu Magazine identified five key mental health trends for 2026: rising rates of anxiety and depression, financial barriers to care, workplace stigma, the growing role of AI support tools, and the need for culturally responsive services in diverse communities.
Mental health professionals caution that AI tools and apps can be useful supplements but should not replace therapy for people dealing with serious conditions. The recommendation is to use digital tools as a bridge, not a substitute, for professional care.
Anyone in crisis can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at any time.
