Mental health disorders have surpassed heart disease and cancer to become the leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting nearly 1.2 billion people, according to research published in June 2026.
The findings, reported by Medical Xpress and other health outlets, show that anxiety and depression remain the most prevalent conditions globally. Researchers say the numbers have been climbing steadily for years and that the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the trend.
In the United States, approximately one in five adults experiences a mental illness each year, according to the American Psychiatric Association. Data from the APA's Healthy Minds Poll shows that while 63 percent of Americans rated their mental health as good or excellent in 2025, many entered 2026 reporting high levels of anxiety about personal finances, current events, and general uncertainty.
Policy responses in the U.S. have been mixed. The Trump administration implemented executive orders in June 2026 to facilitate involuntary commitment of unhoused individuals with serious mental health conditions. Crisis care experts warned the policy could create cycles that strain health systems without providing effective long-term support.
At the same time, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration continued issuing funding opportunities, including Statewide Consumer Network grants with applications due in late June 2026.
Clinicians say the most accessible tools for managing mental health remain consistent sleep, physical activity, and social connection. Experts at UCLA Health published a list of nine mental health tips for 2026, emphasizing daily routines and intentional relationships as the foundation of well-being.
