MIND Diet May Slow Brain Aging by 2.5 Years, New Study Finds

A new study found that people who closely follow the MIND diet, which emphasizes leafy greens, berries, nuts, and fish while limiting red meat and sweets, showed brain aging that was about 2.5 years slower than those who did not follow the diet. Researchers say the findings add to growing evidence that food choices affect long-term cognitive health.

MIND Diet May Slow Brain Aging by 2.5 Years, New Study Finds

People who closely follow the MIND diet show signs of brain aging that are roughly 2.5 years slower than those who do not, according to a new study published in October 2026.

The MIND diet, which stands for Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay, combines elements of the Mediterranean and DASH diets. It emphasizes leafy green vegetables, berries, nuts, whole grains, fish, poultry, olive oil, and beans. It limits red meat, butter, cheese, pastries, and fried foods.

Researchers analyzed brain imaging data and dietary records from hundreds of participants over several years. Those who scored highest on MIND diet adherence had measurably younger-looking brain tissue compared to those with lower scores, even after accounting for age, education, and other health factors.

The study adds to a growing body of research linking diet to brain health. Earlier work has connected the Mediterranean diet to lower rates of dementia and cognitive decline. The MIND diet was specifically designed with brain health in mind, and this study suggests it may deliver on that promise.

Experts caution that the study shows an association, not a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Other lifestyle factors, including exercise, sleep, and social engagement, also play a role in brain aging.

Still, researchers say the findings are encouraging. Dietary changes are one of the more accessible ways people can try to protect their cognitive health as they age. The MIND diet does not require expensive supplements or dramatic lifestyle overhauls, making it a practical option for many adults.
