National Black Church Initiative Launches Parkinson's Disease Awareness Program in Houston and St. Louis

The National Black Church Initiative (NBCI), a coalition representing 150,000 African-American churches and 27.7 million members, has launched a major new educational initiative focused on Parkinson's Disease in Houston, Texas, and St. Louis, Missouri. The program, which also marks the founding of the African American Parkinson Patient Advocacy Association (AAPPAO), aims to address the significant health disparities that affect African Americans living with Parkinson's disease. Research has shown that Black Americans are less likely to be diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and less likely to receive appropriate treatment, despite evidence suggesting they may be at higher risk. NBCI is using its vast network of trusted community institutions to bring education, resources, and advocacy directly to those who need it most. The initiative includes community health fairs, educational workshops, and outreach programs designed to increase awareness of Parkinson's symptoms, treatment options, and available support services. NBCI has also launched a 'Parkinson Brain Health' social media campaign to extend its reach beyond the church walls. The organization's president emphasized that the Black church has always been at the forefront of community health and wellness, and this initiative continues that proud tradition. The launch is part of NBCI's broader Health Emergency Initiative, which addresses a wide range of health disparities affecting African American communities, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and mental health. NBCI is calling on churches, healthcare providers, and community organizations to join the effort and help ensure that every African American living with Parkinson's disease has access to the care and support they deserve.
