The National Black Church Initiative launched a Sunday School Teacher Certificate Course on September 1, 2026, setting a goal of training 10,000 new teachers across its network of 150,000 churches.
The NBCI, which represents 27.7 million members across multiple denominations, said the program is designed to strengthen biblical education in Black congregations and give lay leaders formal teaching credentials.
The certificate course covers biblical interpretation, age-appropriate teaching methods, classroom management, and curriculum development. Participants who complete the program will receive a certificate recognized across NBCI member churches.
"We want every Sunday school classroom in our network to have a trained, equipped teacher," said an NBCI spokesperson. "This is about investing in the next generation of faith leaders from the ground up."
The initiative comes as Black churches across the country are working to deepen their educational programming and retain younger members. Research has shown that strong youth and children's ministry is one of the key factors in long-term church retention.
The NBCI has been active on multiple fronts in September 2026. The organization also launched its Prayer Warriors Circle on September 25, providing daily morning prayer sessions for members. Earlier in the year, the NBCI launched a cryptocurrency education program in partnership with industry leaders, reflecting its commitment to financial literacy alongside spiritual development.
The organization has also continued its health advocacy work, urging members to stay current on immunizations and promoting its "Beautiful Black Babies" campaign to address maternal health disparities.
The Sunday School Teacher Certificate Course is available online and through participating churches. The NBCI said it expects the first cohort of certified teachers to complete the program by early 2027.
