NBCI Launches Black Beautiful Babies Campaign to Address Maternal Health Crisis in Black Communities

The National Black Church Initiative has launched its Black Beautiful Babies campaign, a new effort to address the maternal health crisis disproportionately affecting Black women in the United States.

The NBCI, which represents 150,000 African American churches and approximately 27.7 million members, is mobilizing its network to promote prenatal care, vaccination schedules, and maternal health resources in Black communities.

Black women in the United States face a maternal mortality rate nearly 3.5 times higher than that of white women, according to CDC data. The NBCI says the church is uniquely positioned to reach women who may not have regular access to healthcare providers.

"Our churches are trusted institutions in these communities," said NBCI President Anthony Evans. "We can reach women where they are and connect them with the care they need."

The campaign includes educational programming, partnerships with healthcare providers, and outreach events at participating churches. The NBCI is also working with hospitals and clinics to create referral pathways for pregnant women who need additional support.

The initiative builds on the NBCI's existing health advocacy work, which has included vaccination campaigns and Parkinson's disease awareness programs. The organization has been active in cities including Houston and St. Louis.

Faith leaders participating in the campaign will receive training materials and resources to help them address maternal health topics from the pulpit and in community settings.

The NBCI is calling on member churches to host community health fairs and prenatal education workshops as part of the campaign rollout. The organization plans to track outcomes and report on the program's impact over the next year.
