New Research Finds Eating Less Protein May Support Healthy Aging
A major review published in Cell Press Blue analyzed more than 350 studies and found that reducing protein intake, particularly certain amino acids, may activate cellular repair pathways and support healthy aging. Researchers caution the findings are based largely on animal models.
A major scientific review published in the journal Cell Press Blue in July 2026 found that for many sedentary adults, eating less protein may support healthy aging by activating the body's cellular repair systems.
The review, led by Dudley W. Lamming of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, analyzed more than 350 studies on how protein influences aging. Researchers found that the body operates on a trade-off between a growth state and a repair state. High protein intake promotes growth-signaling pathways that are useful for building muscle but may accelerate cellular aging when constantly overstimulated.
Protein restriction, by contrast, appears to shift the body toward a repair-focused state. It activates autophagy, the process by which cells clear out damaged components, and reduces the buildup of senescent cells that drive inflammation.
The benefits may not require cutting all protein. The review found that restricting three specific amino acids, methionine, isoleucine, and valine, produced similar effects in animal models, including extended lifespan in fruit flies and mice.
In short-term human trials, participants on lower-protein diets showed improvements in fasting blood sugar, insulin sensitivity, and body fat reduction, sometimes while consuming more total calories.
Researchers and independent experts urged caution against broad dietary changes. Protein remains essential for muscle maintenance, especially for active individuals and older adults at risk of muscle wasting. Growing children and pregnant women should not restrict protein intake.
Much of the lifespan extension evidence comes from yeast, flies, and rodents. There is currently no long-term clinical data confirming that protein restriction significantly extends human lifespan. Researchers said protein recommendations should be personalized based on activity level, age, and health status.
