NewYork-Presbyterian Pays $500K to Settle Mental Health Care Lawsuit

NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital agreed to pay $500,000 to settle a mental health care lawsuit brought by the New York Attorney General, the office announced in April 2026.

An investigation found the hospital system failed to properly evaluate and stabilize patients in emergency departments. The hospital also did not bring all licensed inpatient psychiatric beds back online and diverted ambulances carrying mental health patients.

Under the settlement, NewYork-Presbyterian must implement stronger screening policies, mandatory observation protocols, improved documentation practices, and ensure appropriate follow-up care for mental health patients.

The settlement comes as mental health care access remains a pressing issue across the country. According to the American Psychiatric Association, 55% of adults with mental illness do not access any form of treatment.

In the UK, mental health is the leading cause of sickness absence, with an estimated 5 million working days lost to mental ill-health by April 2026. Stress and burnout account for nearly 30% of all NHS staff sickness days.

Mental health advocates said the NewYork-Presbyterian settlement sends a message to hospital systems that failing mental health patients carries legal consequences.
