OpenAI Acquires AI Personal Finance Startup Hiro, Plans to Add Financial Planning to ChatGPT

OpenAI acquired Hiro Finance, an AI-powered personal finance startup, on April 13, 2026. The company announced that Hiro's employees, including founder Ethan Bloch, will join OpenAI. Hiro will cease operations by April 20, 2026, with user data deleted by May 13, 2026.

Hiro offered AI-powered financial planning tools that allowed users to input their financial data and model different scenarios for major decisions, such as buying a home, changing jobs, or planning for retirement. The platform was designed to make complex financial math accessible to everyday consumers.

OpenAI said the acquisition signals its intent to integrate advanced financial planning capabilities into ChatGPT. The company wants to make ChatGPT a more comprehensive assistant for both business users and individual consumers, and Hiro's expertise in financial modeling is a key part of that strategy.

The deal comes during Financial Literacy Month in April, a time when financial education organizations and government agencies are highlighting the importance of smart money management. The U.S. Senate officially recognizes April as Financial Literacy Month.

Hiro was founded by Ethan Bloch, who previously co-founded Digit, a savings automation app that was acquired by Oportun in 2021. Bloch built Hiro with a focus on helping users understand the long-term financial consequences of their decisions.

OpenAI has been expanding its product offerings beyond its core AI models. The company recently launched a $100-per-month Pro plan for ChatGPT and has been building out enterprise tools. Adding financial planning capabilities could help OpenAI compete with dedicated personal finance apps and attract users who want a single AI assistant for multiple tasks.
