Ozempic Now Available in Pill Form as Next-Generation Weight Loss Drugs Advance

Novo Nordisk has released an oral version of Ozempic for people with type 2 diabetes. The company says the lower-dose pill delivers similar results to the injectable form. A separate drug, survodutide, showed 16 percent more weight loss than existing options in phase 3 trials.

Ozempic is now available in pill form, giving people with type 2 diabetes a new option for managing their condition without injections.

Novo Nordisk says the oral GLP-1 formulation delivers similar efficacy to the injectable version at a lower dose. The company has positioned the pill as a more accessible entry point for patients who are reluctant to use injections.

Separately, a new weight loss drug called survodutide showed strong results in phase 3 clinical trials. The drug stimulates both GLP-1 and glucagon receptors, and trial participants lost 16 percent more weight than those on existing medications.

Eli Lilly has also entered the oral GLP-1 market with Foundayo, now available through Amazon One Medical kiosks at a starting price of $149 per month.

Research published this month found that the effectiveness of GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy may vary based on a patient's genetics. Scientists say this could eventually lead to personalized prescribing based on genetic profiles.

One concern raised by researchers is lean body mass loss. A study found that Mounjaro, which contains tirzepatide, may lead to greater loss of lean muscle compared to Ozempic. Doctors say patients using these drugs should pair them with resistance training to preserve muscle.
