Science Corporation Prepares to Place First Sensor in a Human Brain

Science Corporation, the neurotech startup founded by former Neuralink president Max Hodak, is preparing to place its first sensor in a human brain and begin human trials for its biohybrid brain-computer interface.

The company has been developing a device that combines biological and electronic components to create a more stable interface with brain tissue. The approach differs from fully synthetic implants by using biological elements that may integrate more naturally with the brain.

Hodak left Neuralink in 2021 and founded Science Corporation to pursue a different technical path in brain-computer interface research. The company has been conducting animal studies and is now moving toward human trials.

Brain-computer interfaces aim to help people with paralysis, neurological conditions, or limb loss by allowing them to control devices with their thoughts. Neuralink, founded by Elon Musk, implanted its first device in a human patient in January 2024.

Science Corporation's entry into human trials adds another competitor to a field that has grown rapidly in recent years. Other companies working on similar technology include Synchron, which uses a less invasive approach through blood vessels, and Precision Neuroscience.

The company has not disclosed a timeline for when it expects to complete its first human implant or how many participants will be enrolled in the initial trial phase. Regulatory approval from the FDA is required before human trials can begin in the United States.
