The study followed a large group of adults over 50 who received Shingrix and compared their cardiovascular outcomes to those who did not receive the vaccine. The 9 percent reduction in risk was consistent across different age groups and health profiles.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends Shingrix for adults 50 and older, given in two doses two to six months apart. The vaccine is more than 90 percent effective at preventing shingles.
Insurance coverage for Shingrix varies. Medicare Part D covers the vaccine for most beneficiaries. Patients without coverage can expect to pay several hundred dollars for the two-dose series.
