A new study suggests that speaking multiple languages may keep the brain functioning up to 13 years younger than the brains of people who speak only one language.

Researchers found that multilingual adults showed stronger cognitive performance on tests of memory, attention, and processing speed compared to monolingual peers of the same age. The difference was equivalent to having a brain that was up to 13 years younger in terms of cognitive function.

Scientists believe the mental effort required to switch between languages builds what they call cognitive reserve, a kind of mental resilience that helps the brain compensate for age-related changes. People with higher cognitive reserve tend to show fewer symptoms of cognitive decline even when physical changes in the brain are present.

The study adds to a growing body of research on bilingualism and brain health. Earlier studies have suggested that speaking more than one language may delay the onset of dementia symptoms, though the evidence has been debated.

"Every time a bilingual person speaks, they are managing two language systems simultaneously," one researcher explained. "That constant mental workout appears to have real benefits for the aging brain."

The findings do not mean that learning a new language in old age will reverse cognitive decline, researchers caution. But they do suggest that lifelong bilingualism may offer meaningful protection.

Language learning programs and bilingual education advocates say the study supports investment in language education starting in childhood, when the brain is most receptive to acquiring new languages.
