Stair Climbing Linked to 39 Percent Lower Risk of Cardiovascular Death

A large-scale meta-analysis published in August found that regular stair climbing is associated with a 39 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a 24 percent lower risk of death from any cause. Researchers from the University of East Anglia analyzed data from nine studies covering more than 480,000 participants. Experts say even brief daily stair-climbing sessions can make a meaningful difference.

Researchers from the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital published a large-scale meta-analysis in August 2026 finding that regular stair climbing is associated with a 39 percent lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease and a 24 percent lower risk of death from any cause.

The study, published in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs, analyzed data from nine high-quality studies covering more than 480,000 participants ranging in age from 35 to 84 years. The median follow-up period was 14 years. The participant pool included both healthy individuals and those with existing heart conditions.

Consistent stair climbing was also linked to a lower incidence of major cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke, and heart failure. One cohort study included in the analysis suggested that climbing approximately six flights of stairs per day may provide the greatest benefit, though researchers said more work is needed to establish an optimal dose.

Experts noted that stair climbing is a practical form of vigorous physical activity that can be built into daily routines at home or work. They said even brief, one- to two-minute bursts of activity can be meaningful.

The researchers acknowledged limitations in the evidence. Much of the data is observational, meaning it cannot definitively prove that stair climbing alone prevents heart disease. Many studies also relied on self-reported data rather than objective measurements from wearable devices. Professionals recommend alternatives such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling for people with mobility limitations or joint conditions.
