Student Loan Autopay Discount Jumps From 0.25 to 1 Percent Under New Federal Rules

The Department of Education raised the interest rate reduction for federal student loan borrowers enrolled in autopay from 0.25% to 1% as part of the sweeping student loan overhaul that took effect July 1, 2026. The benefit applies to federal direct loans originated after July 1, 2012, and is available for enrollment through September 30, 2026.

Federal student loan borrowers who sign up for autopay can now receive a 1% interest rate reduction, up from the previous 0.25%, under new rules that took effect July 1, 2026.

The change is part of a broad overhaul of the federal student loan system stemming from the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The autopay benefit applies to federal direct loans originated after July 1, 2012. Borrowers have until September 30, 2026, to enroll and receive the higher discount.

The July 1 overhaul also ended the graduate PLUS loan program for new borrowers and placed new annual and lifetime limits on graduate and parent PLUS loans. Income-driven repayment plans were replaced by a new Repayment Assistance Plan.

The rollout has not been smooth. Borrowers and servicers have reported technical glitches, including missing repayment plans and inaccurate payment estimates on loan servicer websites.

A federal appeals court separately required the Education Department to continue discharging loans for 500,000 borrowers following a settlement agreement, adding another layer of complexity to the transition.

Inflation reached a three-year high in May 2026, with the consumer price index rising 4.2% over the prior 12 months. Energy costs, driven by geopolitical tensions, were the primary driver. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate in the 3.5% to 3.75% range at its June meeting and signaled that rate cuts may be off the table for 2026, with some policymakers suggesting potential hikes if inflation persists.

Borrowers looking to reduce their loan costs should contact their servicer directly to confirm autopay enrollment and verify the new rate reduction is applied to their account.
