Vast Space's Haven-1 Commercial Space Station Set to Launch in May 2026

Startup Vast Space is preparing to launch Haven-1, a commercial space station, in May 2026. The launch would mark the first time a privately built space station has reached orbit, opening a new chapter in commercial space operations.

Haven-1 is designed to host paying customers who want to conduct research in microgravity. The station targets scientists, pharmaceutical companies, and other organizations that need access to the unique conditions of low Earth orbit.

The timing is deliberate. The International Space Station is scheduled for deorbit in 2031, and NASA has been working with private companies to develop replacements. Vast Space is one of several startups competing for that market. Axiom Space is developing its own station, described as a more premium offering.

MIT Technology Review listed commercial space stations among its 10 breakthrough technologies for 2026, noting that the transition from government-run to privately operated orbital infrastructure represents a significant shift in how humans access space.

Haven-1 will launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Vast Space has not disclosed the full list of customers for its initial missions, but the company has said it is in discussions with research institutions and government agencies.

The broader commercial space sector is expanding rapidly. SpaceX continues to dominate launch services, while Blue Origin and Rocket Lab are competing for a share of the market. Satellite deployment, space tourism, and in-orbit manufacturing are all drawing investment as the cost of reaching orbit continues to fall.
