Washington DC Symposium Asks Whether the Black Church Is Asleep or Evolving

A symposium titled "Awaken the Sleeping Giant" held in Washington, D.C., in September 2026 brought together Black church leaders to examine whether the Black church is losing its civic influence or simply adapting to new realities.

Pastors and community leaders debated the church's role at a time when younger generations are less connected to traditional religious institutions. Some participants argued the church has gone quiet on issues where it once led. Others said the church is evolving, not sleeping, and that its influence now flows through different channels.

"The question is not whether the church is relevant," said one pastor at the event. "The question is whether we are willing to show up where the people are."

Discussions touched on voter mobilization, economic development, mental health ministry, and the church's response to immigration enforcement. Several speakers pointed to the historic role of Black churches in the civil rights movement as a model for what engaged faith communities can accomplish.

The symposium also addressed the challenge of retaining young adults. Participants noted that while younger Black Americans report high levels of spiritual interest, many are not attending church regularly. Leaders called for new approaches to worship, community service, and digital outreach.

Similar conversations took place in Los Angeles, where the Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles and Southern California held a city-wide revival at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Organizers there emphasized the need to preserve the faith and fellowship of the Black church for the next generation.
