CDC Warns of Cyclospora Outbreak Tied to Taco Bell Lettuce in Five States
The CDC is investigating a multistate Cyclospora outbreak linked to shredded iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms de Mexico served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. More than 1,644 cases have been confirmed as of July 18, 2026, with 94 hospitalizations. Taylor Farms recalled all iceberg lettuce from central Mexico on July 17.

The CDC is investigating a multistate outbreak of cyclosporiasis linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in five states, with more than 1,644 confirmed cases as of July 18, 2026.
The outbreak is tied to lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms de Mexico. Cases have been confirmed in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia. Ninety-four people have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
On July 17, 2026, Taylor Farms de Mexico recalled all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico. The recall covers products sold at retail stores, including Marketside-brand lettuce at Walmart, and lettuce distributed to food service establishments. Consumers are advised not to eat any recalled lettuce and to discard or return it.
Cyclosporiasis is caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, and fatigue. Symptoms typically appear about one week after exposure, though onset can range from two to 14 days.
The CDC said the total number of domestic cases since May 1, 2026, has reached 1,645 across 34 states, a sharp increase from the 249 cases reported during the same period in 2025. More than 5,100 additional cases are under investigation to confirm whether they were domestically acquired.
The agency is urging clinicians to specifically request Cyclospora testing, as routine parasite exams often miss the infection. The recommended treatment is a seven to ten day course of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
The CDC said cyclosporiasis is frequently underreported and the actual number of illnesses is likely higher than current surveillance data shows.
