The new study found that people with a higher genetic predisposition to Alzheimer's experienced more of these disruptions, even before any cognitive symptoms appeared.
The findings add to a growing body of research connecting sleep quality to brain health. Earlier studies have shown that the brain clears waste products, including amyloid proteins linked to Alzheimer's, during deep sleep. Disrupted sleep may impair this clearing process, potentially accelerating the accumulation of harmful proteins.
Separate research reported in September 2026 found that brain changes associated with Alzheimer's may begin at least seven years before amyloid plaques become detectable via PET scans. Together, these findings suggest that sleep disruption could be both an early warning sign and a contributing factor in the disease's progression.
