GLP-1 Drug Zepbound Found Effective for Sleep Apnea When Combined With CPAP Therapy
The GLP-1 weight loss drug Zepbound has shown effectiveness in treating obstructive sleep apnea when used alongside CPAP therapy, according to new research. The findings expand the potential uses of GLP-1 medications beyond diabetes and weight management.
Zepbound, the GLP-1 weight loss drug made by Eli Lilly, has shown effectiveness in treating obstructive sleep apnea when combined with CPAP therapy, according to research published in September 2026.
The study found that patients using Zepbound alongside their CPAP machines experienced greater reductions in sleep apnea symptoms than those using CPAP alone. Researchers measured improvements in the number of breathing interruptions per hour during sleep, a key indicator of sleep apnea severity.
Obstructive sleep apnea affects an estimated 30 million Americans. The condition causes repeated pauses in breathing during sleep and is linked to cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and daytime fatigue. Obesity is a major risk factor.
GLP-1 drugs like Zepbound and Ozempic have become widely used for weight loss and diabetes management. Researchers have been studying whether the significant weight loss these drugs produce might also improve conditions linked to obesity, including sleep apnea.
"Weight loss is one of the most effective treatments for sleep apnea," said a sleep medicine specialist not involved in the study. "If GLP-1 drugs can help patients lose weight and improve their sleep at the same time, that is a meaningful benefit."
The FDA approved Zepbound for obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity in late 2024. This new research adds to the evidence supporting that approval.
Researchers noted that CPAP therapy remains the standard first-line treatment for sleep apnea and that Zepbound should be considered a complement to, not a replacement for, that therapy.
