Houston Christian University President Robert Sloan Dies at 77

Robert B. Sloan Jr., the president of Houston Christian University, died suddenly this week. He was 77.

Sloan had led Houston Christian University since 2006, guiding the school through a period of growth and name changes. The institution was formerly known as Houston Baptist University.

Before coming to Houston, Sloan served as president of Baylor University from 1995 to 2005. During his tenure at Baylor, he launched a major initiative to elevate the school into a top-tier research university while maintaining its Baptist identity. The effort drew both praise and controversy, and Sloan eventually stepped down amid faculty tensions.

At Houston Christian, he oversaw the construction of new facilities and the expansion of graduate programs. The school grew its enrollment and strengthened its Christian mission under his leadership.

Houston Christian University released a statement calling Sloan a "faithful servant of Christ and a tireless advocate for Christian higher education." No cause of death was immediately disclosed.

Sloan is survived by his wife and children. Memorial arrangements were pending as of this report.
