Nvidia Confirms 12.93 Billion Dollar Acquisition of Hugging Face

Nvidia confirmed on September 3 that it will acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI platform, for 12.93 billion dollars. Hugging Face hosts over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications, serving more than 18 million developers. Nvidia confirmed on September 3, 2026, that it will acquire Hugging Face, the open-source AI model-sharing platform, for 12.93 billion dollars.

Hugging Face CEO Clement Delangue initiated the acquisition talks during the summer of 2026, citing a need for greater resources and scale to support what he called a "turning point" for open-source AI. The deal was formally confirmed after several weeks of negotiations.

Hugging Face currently hosts over 3 million models, 500,000 datasets, and 1 million applications, serving more than 18 million developers worldwide. The platform is widely used by researchers, startups, and large technology companies to share and deploy AI models.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said Hugging Face will continue to operate as an open platform. Nvidia hardware will not be required to build or deploy models on the site, and the platform will maintain support for multi-cloud and multi-accelerator environments.

The acquisition is Nvidia's second-largest to date, trailing only the 20 billion dollar purchase of Groq assets finalized in late 2025. Nvidia has historically been a major contributor to the Hugging Face ecosystem, having released over 500 models and 250 open datasets on the platform before the deal.

The transaction gives Nvidia a deeper foothold in the AI software and model ecosystem, extending its reach beyond chips and hardware into the developer tools and model-sharing layer of the AI stack.

Both Huang and Delangue highlighted the importance of open-source models in developing distributed cybersecurity systems, noting that open models provide an advantage to defenders against cyber threats.
