OpenAI Releases GPT-5.5 Instant as New Default ChatGPT Model

OpenAI has released GPT-5.5 Instant as the new default model for ChatGPT. The update focuses on reducing hallucinations in high-stakes domains and adds advanced context management, making the model more reliable for professional and enterprise use.

The release comes as OpenAI faces growing competition from other AI developers. The company also turned a sold-out GPT-5.5 event into a month-long Codex giveaway for 8,000 developers, aiming to deepen its role in software development workflows.

Tech Startups reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman had previously discussed spinning out the company's robotics and consumer-hardware units for independent funding, but shelved the plan. The company is now prioritizing a new superapp for coders and enterprises ahead of a planned IPO.

A former technology chief for OpenAI testified in court that Altman sowed distrust among top executives and created persistent chaos as the company developed and deployed its AI software. The testimony added to scrutiny of OpenAI's internal management.

Google is also testing an AI personal agent called Remy inside the Gemini app, designed to take proactive actions across various tasks. Microsoft is discontinuing the Copilot AI feature on Xbox as part of a broader leadership shake-up.

The AI model market is moving quickly. Elon Musk acknowledged in court that xAI had, to some extent, distilled OpenAI models, raising questions about training data and model rights across the industry.
