Survey Finds 72 Percent of Startup Founders Struggle With Mental Health but Most Hide It

Survey Finds 72 Percent of Startup Founders Struggle With Mental Health but Most Hide It

Seventy-two percent of startup founders experience mental health struggles, but 81 percent keep those challenges hidden, according to a survey published in September 2026.

The findings have prompted mental health advocates and business coaches to push for a cultural shift in how the startup world talks about psychological well-being. Experts say the pressure to project confidence and success makes it especially hard for founders to seek help.

"The startup culture rewards toughness and punishes vulnerability," said one mental health professional who works with entrepreneurs. "That is a dangerous combination."

The survey found that anxiety and depression are the most common issues founders face. Many reported that the stress of managing employees, investors, and uncertain finances takes a significant toll over time.

Mental health professionals are now recommending that founders treat their psychological health as a "daily operating signal," similar to how they track financial metrics. Suggested practices include weekly self-check-ins, regular exercise, and early intervention with a therapist before problems become severe.

The American Psychiatric Association reported earlier this year that 38 percent of Americans planned mental health-related resolutions for 2026, a 5 percent increase from the previous year. Younger adults, particularly those aged 18 to 34, are driving that trend.

State funding for suicide prevention and crisis services has climbed sharply between 2021 and 2026, reflecting growing recognition of the mental health challenges facing Americans across all walks of life.
