Uber Cuts 3,300 Jobs as It Shifts Focus to Autonomous Vehicles

Uber announced on September 2, 2026, that it is cutting approximately 3,300 employees, roughly 10 percent of its global workforce, as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi moves to flatten the company's management structure and redirect investment toward autonomous vehicles.

The company said it has notified affected workers, except where local employment laws require a different process. Uber is also consolidating employees into major hubs and reducing fully remote positions.

Khosrowshahi said the cuts are not a response to a struggling core business. Instead, he argued that organizational complexity has slowed decision-making and created too many small teams and coordination layers. The company is simultaneously preparing for an expensive transition as autonomous vehicles move closer to commercial deployment.

Waymo and other robotaxi developers could eventually reshape ride-hailing economics, forcing Uber to decide how much autonomous technology it builds itself and how much it accesses through partnerships. The layoffs are part of a broader strategic repositioning rather than a conventional response to financial pressure.

Uber is also considering a $15 billion takeover bid for Delivery Hero, according to reports, as it looks to expand its delivery business alongside its transportation operations.

The restructuring reflects a broader pattern across the technology industry, where companies are cutting management layers and investing more heavily in artificial intelligence and automation even as they reduce headcount.
