Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Expands Access to Weight Loss Drugs

Medicare launched a bridge program on July 1, 2026, that covers GLP-1 medications for eligible beneficiaries, expanding access to drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy that have become central to weight management treatment.
The program is designed as a temporary measure while Congress and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services work out longer-term coverage rules. GLP-1 drugs, which mimic a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar, have shown strong results for weight loss and have also been linked to reduced cardiovascular risk.
Until now, Medicare coverage for these drugs has been limited. The bridge program changes that for a subset of beneficiaries who meet specific criteria, including a body mass index above a certain threshold and at least one weight-related health condition.
Retailers have also moved to expand access. Hy-Vee, a Midwest grocery chain, launched its own GLP-1 program in July, offering the medications through its pharmacy network at reduced cost for customers who do not qualify for Medicare coverage.
The drugs are not without concerns. Studies have raised questions about muscle loss in older adults taking GLP-1 medications, and some patients report side effects including nausea, fatigue, and changes in taste and smell. Researchers are also studying long-term effects that are not yet fully understood.
Demand for GLP-1 drugs has outpaced supply at various points over the past two years, though manufacturers say production has largely caught up. Generic versions are in development but are not yet available.
The Medicare bridge program is expected to cover hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries in its first year.
