GLP-1 Weight Loss Drugs Linked to Lower Breast Cancer Risk in New Study

A new observational study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting found that GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are associated with a lower rate of breast cancer diagnoses in women. Researchers cautioned that the findings are preliminary and do not prove the drugs prevent cancer.

A new study presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology annual meeting in June 2026 found that women taking GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs had lower rates of breast cancer diagnoses compared to women who did not take the drugs.

The study was led by Dr. Elizabeth Susan McDonald of the University of Pennsylvania. Researchers analyzed data from tens of thousands of women over several years. Those on GLP-1 medications, which include semaglutide drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, showed a statistically significant reduction in breast cancer incidence.

Doctors cautioned that the study is observational, meaning it cannot prove the drugs cause the reduction. Other factors, including weight loss itself, may explain the association. Obesity is a known risk factor for breast cancer, and GLP-1 drugs produce significant weight loss in most patients.

The findings add to a growing body of research suggesting GLP-1 drugs may have benefits beyond blood sugar control and weight management. Earlier studies have linked the drugs to lower rates of heart disease and certain other cancers.

The Susan G. Komen Foundation called the results encouraging but said more research is needed before any clinical recommendations can be made.

GLP-1 drugs have become among the most prescribed medications in the United States. Demand has outpaced supply in recent years, though manufacturers have expanded production.
