Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Launches, Covering Weight Loss Drugs for 14 Million

A new Medicare pilot program that launched July 1, 2026, aims to lower the cost of GLP-1 weight loss medications like Wegovy and Zepbound for eligible beneficiaries. The program could benefit up to 14 million Medicare recipients, with monthly costs dropping to around $50. The initiative comes as demand for GLP-1 drugs has surged and federal regulators are also reviewing applications for cheaper generic versions.

Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program Launches, Covering Weight Loss Drugs for 14 Million

A new Medicare pilot program launched July 1, 2026, offering lower-cost access to GLP-1 weight loss medications for eligible beneficiaries. The Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program could benefit up to 14 million Medicare recipients, with monthly costs for drugs like Wegovy and Zepbound dropping to approximately $50.

The program was announced by the Department of Health and Human Services and represents a significant shift in federal coverage of obesity medications. GLP-1 drugs, which include semaglutide and tirzepatide, have shown strong results for weight loss and have also been linked to reduced risks of heart attack, stroke, and other conditions.

Demand for these medications has grown sharply over the past two years. The new pilot program is designed to test whether broader Medicare coverage can improve health outcomes while managing costs for the federal government.

Separately, federal regulators agreed in early July to review applications from a Swiss pharmaceutical company for two cheaper generic versions of Zepbound and Mounjaro. If approved, generic versions could further reduce costs for patients who pay out of pocket.

Health officials have also raised concerns about accidental dosing mistakes with semaglutide, noting that errors rather than misuse are driving a high volume of calls to poison control centers. The FDA has urged manufacturers to improve packaging and labeling to reduce confusion.

The launch of the Medicare bridge program comes as the GLP-1 market continues to expand. Analysts estimate the global market for these drugs could reach hundreds of billions of dollars over the next decade as more conditions are studied and approved indications grow.
